presentations to the board of education superintendent report. superintendent carranza your thoughts for the evening. >> great thank you president yee. ladies and gentlemen and all of our parents listening at home. i wish you a good evening. thank you for being here in the board room. just a few thoughts to share with you. we are coming upon a very special election in the next few weeks and people will have an opportunity to vote and as you're deciding on candidates and ballot measures to vote for i would like to draw your attention to proposition 30 and 38. with the understanding that if these prop propositions pass they have significant impact on funding. if neither one passes financial resources will be greatly diminished for schools in california and specifically here in san francisco. the lodge cuts include that we will be forced to shorten the school year by five days this year and nine days next year in addition to the substantial cuts that will be at school sites and for students. i want to encourage all of you to vote in the election. vo

let seniors and the best way to prevent crime is by education. cases like these can grow exponentially, especially if thieves are successful, it spreads. and the only way to stop that is to let folks know individually and by a group. we have been doing a lot of elder abuse, financial abuse education starting in may for elder abuse awareness month. we were in the tenderloin and did a forum on elder abuse at the self help for the elderly's downtown senior center. we did a merchant walk and self-help in a subforum in chinatown. we have worked with groups like asian pacific islander, adult protective services, cameron house, adult protective services, sf safe and another group, asian-american community center and the police department to help seniors understand don't give over your jewelry or your money, it is not a good idea. we have had four forums, the first in may in chinatown; we had a second in chinatown; a third in the outer sunset and yesterday visitation vaolly. -- valley. every one have been jammed packed. we estimate we have educated over

[applause] okay. i am coming to my last two slides, so you can have a sigh of relief from numbers and how did sfusd perform compared to other school districts in california and how do you think we did? okay. so as you can see we are -- when we say we're one of the highest performing districts here is the performance of all the other districts. we just took a sample of five others as well as the state so the state is at 57% proficiency and we are at 61%. last year to this year the state moved from 54 to 57 and we moved from 57 to 61. 60.5 percent rounded was 61%. csd map -- again this is grades two through 11. you will see that the state is at 52%. we're at 57% proficiency. their growth was 50 to 52%. ours was 56 to 57%. and with that i am going to turn it back to -- what was the reason? the cause? the validity behind these, the best practices. >> thank

so, i think what president mccarthy said is the key, we want to do more education. we don't all have the resources. no department has all the resources so we can do it alone. i think maybe we could offer ourselves to do that. and also to work with some of the other supervisors. i know that supervisor chu has some legislation to deal with owners, not just the small business -- because a lot of small businesses are renters. so, they move into a place thinking they can just open up as-is and then they get a lawsuit because it's not totally accessible. and then they get into a battle with the owner who said, wait, i just rented you the place as-is. i'm not doing nothing to the building. so, stuff like that. we just have to work more collectively so that especially the small independent businesses have a little bit of recourse that they can go to somebody and learn what they're getting into. >> and if i may add one thing. so, there is a senate bill 11 86 which they passed in the state or assembly and is currently on the governor's desk and i just received information tod
